“A man’s power is in the half-light, in the half-seen movements of his hand and the unguessed-at expression of his face. It is the absence of facts that frightens people: the gap you open, into which they pour their fears, fantasies, desires.”
― Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall

There aren’t a lot of celebrities that I can be bothered to form an opinion about. I get attached to some television shows, I’ll give some a chance, but most will come and go like casual acquaintances. I’m not completely removed from pop music, but I could probably only guess a small handful of songs that are on the Top 40 or Hot 100.
As for the stuff that I like, it’s hard for me to gush over it or develop some sort of “fandom,” if you will.
It’s hard for me, these days, to get really angry over a celebrity. If that celebrity makes products that don’t really appeal to me, I usually just don’t find them interesting and pay them little mind. I can’t get mad at that. If they do something awful as a human being, it’s a different story.
To me, there’s a lot of uninteresting shit out there that’s passed off into pop culture. For the most part, I’m pretty indifferent to it. I like what I like—if I don’t, whatever. I find it difficult to HATE something. I feel like feeling some sort of anger over something that isn’t marketed to me is still buying into that thing—the marketing strategy works because I’m talking about it, advertising it, giving it the benefit of my emotional feedback.
There are some things that I do get angry about in terms of pop culture, but for the most part, I prefer indifference to negativity. It’s probably why I scrapped plans for the menswear blog that just shit on bad or bland fashion recommendations.
I just don’t like investing in my own anger or distaste. It’s not a good feeling.
